Recipe: Nourishing Hot Cocoa

Cold winter days call for something warm and comforting. And while the convenient little packets of sugary deliciousness in store bought hot cocoa are definitely tasty, they do not nourish the body. This recipe gives you all the yumminess of the hot cocoa you know and love, but with wellness-building nourishment! No guilt, no sugar crash, and it's very adaptable to suit a variety of dietary plans, so keep reading!

Nourishing Hot Cocoa - GF, SF, Paleo, Keto | Salt & Light Natural Wellness

1 cup of hot water (or hot milk of your choice)

2 heaping tablespoons of powdered cacao*

Stevia to taste (a little goes a long way)

Optional Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of organic grass-fed butter, ghee, or cold-pressed coconut oil

1/2 scoop of powdered greens in Chocolate flavor (I like Amazing Grass brand)

1/4 scoop of powdered collagen peptides (I like Vital Proteins brand)

*Cacao differs from cocoa in that cocoa has been processed with high heat. They both come from the same tree seeds and are both beneficial, but raw cacao does retain a bit more nutrition than cocoa. Always look for cacao and cocoa that has been sustainably sourced.

Cacao is a good source of dietary magnesium and iron and has anti-inflammatory properties.


Mix all ingredients in a blender or mixer and whip on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute or until frothy. Alternatively, hand whip it vigorously with a whisk for a minute or two.
